The Golden Plains Shire has been ranked as one of Australia's most livable areas.

Golden Plains sits south of Ballarat and stretches to the outskirts of Geelong.

A survey by BankWest ranked communities based on indicators including home ownership, health and crime rates.

Golden Plains was named the seventh most livable area in Victoria, and 19th in Australia.

The survey found it is appealing because it has a low rate of property crime, lots of detached houses and more than 90 per cent of the residents own their homes.

Just a short distance away, north of Ballarat, the Central Goldfields Shire was ranked as one of the worst regions to live in.

It came in at 70 out of the 79 local government areas in the state.
