Data reveals mining towns growth

Posted August 20, 2008 14:13:00

New population data reveals some interesting trends throughout the north Queensland region in the past decade.

The latest update of regional population growth from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows mining communities have grown rapidly in the past few years.

Between 1996 and 2001 the population of the former Broadsound council decreased by 3 per cent, but by 2006 had increased by 2.4 per cent on the 1996 total.

It was a similar story for both the former Belyando and Nebo local government areas, with Nebo ranked the third fastest growing region in the state.

In other centres, Whitsunday had constant growth across the decade, but their biggest increase was between 2001 and 2006, of 3.3 per cent.

Mackay's growth for the same period was 3.5 per cent, which is well above the state average.
