The jury in the trial of 12 men accused of forming a Melbourne-based terrorist cell has retired to consider its verdict.

The six-month criminal trial is one of Victoria's longest and most complex.

The prosecution alleges the men were preparing for a terrorist attack, and their preferred targets were in Australia.

The group's alleged leader, Abdul Nacer Benbrika, and his 11 co-accused, have pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges.

During the trial, the jury heard that some of the men were secretly recorded discussing terrorist acts.

It heard some of the accused shared a common library of violent material, including handbooks on bomb-making.

The jury was also told by a convicted conman, that the AFL Grand Final and Crown Casino were among Benbrika's targets.
