An 86-year-old alleged war criminal has been granted bail while he continues to fight efforts to have him extradited to Hungary to face a murder charge.

The Hungarian Government accuses Charles Zentai of murdering a Jewish teenager in 1944.

Today a Magistrate ruled that all the requirements of Hungary's application had been met and Mr Zentai could be extradited.

She remanded him in custody, however late today Mr Zentai was granted bail by a Federal Court judge, who said that his age, his significant health problems and his ties to Western Australia meant there was no risk he would flee the state.

Mr Zentai's lawyers have already lodged an appeal against the Magistrate's extradition ruling.

A date for the hearing is yet to be set.
