A court has heard a Canberra music teacher arrested as part of Australia's biggest child pornography operation is deeply ashamed of his actions.

Richard Llewellyn from Chisholm has pleaded guilty to possessing about 20,000 images and a number of videos depicting children engaged in sexually explicit acts.

He was arrested in March as part of Operation Centurion.

Today during sentencing submissions, the ACT Supreme Court heard the images included children performing sexual acts on adults and animals.

The court heard Llewellyn accessed child pornography almost every night for two years before his arrest.

The court was told Llewellyn became so obsessed with the internet that he developed deep vein thrombosis from sitting for hours at his computer.

Llewellyn told the court, on reflection his viewing horrifies him.

A pre-sentence report said the 58-year-old did not realise his actions would hurt anyone but that he now feels extremely bad.

Sentencing submissions will continue next month.
