Albury Mayor questions low livable ranking

Albury's Mayor says the city's listing towards the bottom of a list of Australia's most livable places does not make sense.

The BankWest Index of Living has ranked Albury at number 410 in a list of 590 council areas in the country.

The Indigo Shire tops the Goulburn Murray region at 15, while Towong is 33, Greater Hume 34 and Wangaratta 62.

Albury Mayor Stuart Baker says he was surprised Albury was towards the end of the list.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I'm sure they've got their methodology and science behind it all," he said.

"Everyone would take it with a grain of salt and it's one measure and I don't think many people would be looking at that when they work out where they're going to live or whether they move if they have a low score where they do live."

The Mayor of the Indigo Council, Vic Issell, says it will use the favourable livability ranking to promote the shire.

"In terms of our promotional efforts around tourism and trying to attract people to come and live here, we'll obviously use this sort of information," he said.
