The State Government is considering offering compensation and an apology to people who were abused in the Royal Derwent psychiatric hospital at New Norfolk.

The Health Minister Lara Giddings says there have been some horrific stories of mistreatment.

A parliamentary committee will look into past abuse and consider a formal apology for former patients.

The Government is also making a compensation scheme for people abused as wards of Tasmania open-ended.

It previously has said the compensation scheme would close.

Ms Giddings has announced a rethink.

She says it takes courage for people to reveal abuse so the scheme will be made open-ended.

A trust fund will be set up to fund future payments of up to $35,000.
