The Tasmanian Government and the Launceston City Council are clamping down on graffiti in the city.

Police are targetting graffiti artists and will be urging them to paint over their unwanted work.

Launceston residents are also being asked to ring a new hotline when they see graffiti so that police can photograph and catalogue it.

The Police Minister Jim Cox says Launceston is the first city in the state to trial the program

"I think that most people would agree that some of these people are extremely talented and there is an opportunity for them the skate park is a good place for them to do it," Mr Cox said.

"This is a matter of getting it away from the buildings, getting it away from private property, certainly use your talents in areas where it is acceptable but don't go out into the streets where it is not acceptable."

The new graffiti hotline is 131 444.
