Kluft fails to make long jump final

Posted August 22, 2008 23:21:00

Sweden's 2004 heptathlon Olympic champion Carolin Kluft has failed to make the cut in the long jump final.

The 25-year-old Swede jumped a best of 6.49 metres but it was only good enough for ninth place, one place outside the competitors who will contest the final three jumps.

The three-time world champion, who decided not to contest the heptathlon because she wanted more time to herself, earlier failed to reach the triple jump final.

The leading three going into the final jumps were surprise leader Maurren Maggi of Brazil (7.04m), Russia's defending champion Tatiana Lebedeva - who took silver in the triple jump - (6.97m) and Nigerian Blessing Okagbare (6.91m).

The 29-year-old Nigerian gained a late entry into the final - having finished as 13th best qualifier - because Ukraine's heptathlon silver medallist and long jump finalist Lyudmila Blonska was thrown out of the Games on Friday for failing a dope test.
