Berlin Holocaust memorial desecrated with swastikas

German police say they are investigating the desecration of the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, after a caretaker for the monument discovered 11 Nazi swastikas on seven of the memorial's pillars.
The swastikas, in red and black, measured between 20 and 60 centimetres, the police statement said.
The memorial, which commemorates the 6 million European Jews murdered by the Nazis, covers 19,000 square metres in the heart of the capital and is a labyrinth of charcoal grey concrete plinths.
It comprises 2,711 slabs that vary in height and are set 95 centimetres apart.
More than 7 million people have visited the memorial since its opening in May 2005.
On August 16, the monument in Berlin dedicated to the thousands of homosexuals persecuted and tortured by the Nazis was vandalised less than two months after having been unveiled.
