Climate change meet to hear power generation support

Posted August 25, 2008 14:04:00

The Latrobe City Council will represent Gippsland councils at a session in Traralgon this afternoon on the Federal Government's climate change green paper.

The document was released earlier this year outlining the Government's carbon trading policy.

The Latrobe Valley coal and electricity industry is concerned the trading policy will make their businesses non-viable.

Alison Jones from the Latrobe City Council says local government will be putting a six-point case to the meeting, supporting the region's role in power generation.

"I guess the only bit of comfort we can draw is that given the base load that comes out of the Latrobe city for the state is that it would be in the whole of Victoria's interest to continue to utilise the base load certainly of brown coal," she said.
