Rudd won't move on Building and Construction Commission

Posted August 25, 2008 20:39:00

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has told Government MPs he will not be budging on an election promise to retain the Building and Construction Commission until 2010.

The Building and Construction Commission was formed by the previous Coalition government to tackle alleged corruption and improve productivity within the building industry.

The construction union opposed the Commission from the start, claiming it was set up to stop unions protecting the rights of workers.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has invited Labor MPs to a briefing in Canberra tonight and hopes to convince them to scrap the Commission immediately.

The matter was raised at today's Labor Caucus meeting.

One MP asked whether the election promise to keep the Commission could be changed if it was found circumstances had now changed.

Mr Rudd responded by saying the Government would keep all election promises, including those relating to the Commission.
