Wong heads to Cooma for Snowy talks

Posted August 26, 2008 11:00:00

The Federal Government's Water Minister will be in Cooma, in south-east New South Wales, this week, for talks on the Snowy River.

Penny Wong will be meeting the Snowy River Alliance to discuss the ongoing plan to rejuvenate the former wild river and how that impacts on efforts to overcome the water crisis in the Murray-Darling system.

Her visit to Cooma on Friday will coincide with the second meeting of the Snowy River Advisory Committee set up by the federal Member for Eden Monaro, Mike Kelly, to advise him on issues surrounding the Snowy.

The chairman of the Snowy River Alliance, John Gallard, says the magnitude of the worsening drought means that no one river issue can be looked at in isolation.

"We're in the middle of a major drought period and yet we see people still not entirely aware of just how critical our water situation is and we want to highlight our concerns to the Minister," he said.

"We're not looking at it from just a singular point of view from the Snowy River, we're concerned about water management Australia-wide."
