Police crack down on Snowy drink-drivers

Posted August 26, 2008 12:09:00

A major police operation has been underway in the Snowy Mountains targeting drink-driving and drugs.

Additional police and equipment were brought to Jindabyne for the three-day operation, which focused on the large numbers of vehicles heading to and from the snowfields.

They set up random breath testing stations and also used one of the state's specially equipped drug buses to help test drivers.

Nearly 2000 motorists were breath tested during the operation, with six failing the test.

More than 300 drug tests were also conducted, with two failing the roadside test and subsequently suspended for driving.

Police issued 39 infringement notices for a variety of traffic offences. A further two motorists were found to be driving while suspended or without having a licence.

Monaro local area command Inspector Ian Davey was pleased with the results of the operation and says police will continue to be vigilant in patrolling alpine roads.

"We're all about ensuring people come to this area to enjoy their time without incident and ... return home safely," he said.

"This has been the best snow season since 2004 and therefore there has been an influx of visitors to the area. Visitors may be unfamiliar with driving in snowy conditions, including black ice, and should take extra care to drive to the conditions of the road.

"Not only will police be conducting operations to ensure our roads are safe for everyone, any illegal behaviour that comes under police notice will be dealt with."

Police will continue to conduct operations which target road safety and other antisocial offences during the snow season.
