Grain harvest size to determine rail route

Posted August 26, 2008 12:40:00

A Melbourne-based freight train operator says the size of this year's grain harvest will determine what parts of Victoria it services.

El Zorro and grain handler AWB have announced a five-year deal for bulk grain haulage in Victoria and New South Wales.

Four trains will service the two states and 84 new wagons are expected to be in service next year.

But El Zorro's Geoff Tighe says the routes the trains will travel are not determined.

"The contract is open in this sense, that we've put to AWB that we'll operate four trains for them wherever they require, depending on the grain conditions," he said.

"We've made it plain that we're prepared to go far and wide as the commercial requirements dictate."
