Grain handler promises no GM contamination

Grain handler GrainCorp says site specific protocols will be in place at two northern Victorian receival sites that are destined to take genetically modified (GM) canola.

The Raywood silo, north of Bendigo, and the Lubeck silo, near Horsham, will be the only two Victorian sites accepting GM canola during the coming harvest.

But the Bendigo council is against the plan, saying it wants the municipality to be a GM-free zone.

GrainCorp's David Ginns says special measures will ensure there is no contamination of conventional grain, with GM canola.

"We can create a dedicated path and specific protocols for receival testing, storage and out turn of GM canola and that's a commitment that we've made," he said.

"We will be following through on that commitment this season."
