Plea to help pensioners living alone

Posted August 26, 2008 15:47:00

Tasmania's Country Women's Association has joined the call to boost pensions for older people living alone.

The group is holding its annual State Conference in Devonport, with drought-relief and pensions among the big issues.

It will make a submission to the Federal Government's pension review, highlighting the extra strain in rural areas.

The CWA's State President, Elizabeth Clark, says older people who are on their own are worst-hit.

She says the submission calls on the Government to help them first.

"And consider the fact that the greatest costs are static, for both singles and couples, ie. rent, power, car insurance, etc," Mrs Clarke said.

"Only lesser costs, such as food, medicine and clothing change.

"This should be done with a view to changing the aged pension to align with the basic wage."
