ASIC to investigate proposed Qld Racing changes

Posted August 26, 2008 17:05:00

The Queensland Government says controversial changes to Queensland Racing Limited will not be approved until they have been investigated.

Retired Supreme Court Judge Bill Carter has accused Queensland Racing head Bob Bentley and Australian Workers Union president Bill Ludwig of exercising proxy votes without the permission of industry groups.

The Opposition says the Racing Minister was warned of the dangers of vote rorting, but Andrew Fraser says it will be investigated by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC).

"In the circumstances, obviously any application that's been received by me will not be progressed until these matters are sorted out," he said.

"Should the matters that are currently the subject of investigation be resolved one way or another, then that will be determinative in my assessment of whether or not to proceed with the application that's before me."

Meanwhile, the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) says it is not the appropriate body to investigate the allegations of vote-rorting.

CMC chairman Robert Needham says a complaint was assessed, but it was found the concerns were issues for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.
