Children blamed for pelican attacks

There is a claim today that children could be responsible for acts of cruelty against seabirds in parts of the Eurobodalla.

The Australian Seabird Rescue Organisation is investigating reports that pelicans are being deliberately snared with nylon fishing line and hooks.

The organisation's regional coordinator, Julie Clarke, says there is growing concern over the number and frequency of the attacks.

She says during a visit this week it did not take long to find injured birds.

"These birds have a lot of hooks in them, but one of the things that have really stuck out are the number of injuries to their pouch and head from ... local children we understand, from people around the area," she said.

"Local children who have been throwing rocks and trying to actually catch the pelicans with hooks and so forth. It is a big concern that out of four birds, three were injured."
