The Tharwa bridge south of Canberra will reopen to light traffic tomorrow.

Commuters have been forced to take a long detour to Tharwa since the 110-year-old bridge was closed more than two years ago.

A $14 million restoration project is still underway but vehicles under 5 tonnes will be able to use the bridge from tomorrow.

Heavy vehicles will still have to cross the Murrumbidgee River at Point Hut Crossing.

ACT Roads director Tony Gill says the restoration is expected to be completed within three years.

"As conservation and restoration work continues the bridge will need to be closed to traffic for fixed periods of time," he said.

"Any future closures will be kept to a minimum with the timing worked out in consultation with local residents and businesses."
