Kiwi handed key rowing role

Posted August 27, 2008 13:36:00

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Rowing Australia (RA) have appointed New Zealand's Andrew Matheson as the new head of high performance.

Matheson will start his new job in November.

He has spent the past six years in the same role for Rowing New Zealand.

Matheson is credited for leading New Zealand to three gold medals at last year's World Championship and one gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Rowing Australia is confident that current high performance director Noel Donaldson will work alongside Matheson.

Chief executive Andrew Dee says he would like to see Donaldson taking a more hands-on role.

"Noel's value is in helping our boats to go fast, and that we needed someone that was going to manage the integration of those programs plus also the relationships with the states and to be able to focus on that without having to focus too much about the daily training environment of the athletes," he said.
