Farmers look for rain crops boost

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is good news for farmers hoping for a burst of rain that could see this year's harvest go from being a good year to a great year.

Strong rains in June and July got the season off to a good start, but four dry weeks in Western Australia's mid-west and wheatbelt have seen CBH lower its harvest predictions to between eight and 10 million tonnes.

Carlie Rowe, whose family has farms south of Mullewa and in West Arano, says local farmers are guaranteed a strong crop, but one last burst of rain would be ideal.

"It's looking good down there, but they really really need a drink now," she said.

"Even towards the coast here, everyone needs a drink, especially the sandplain country."

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Luke Huntington says a front is expected to hit the northern wheatbelt and mid-west coast today.

He says medium-strength showers could continue through to Friday morning.

"Looks like the heaviest falls will be around that mid-west area actually, so you wouldn't rule out under about 15 or 20 millimetres in those areas," he said.

"I'd imagine farmers would be very happy with the rain that's to come in the next few days."
