Tasmanians feeling safer but taking risks

Posted August 27, 2008 15:47:00

The latest Tasmania Together snapshot shows Tasmanians are feeling safer and participating more in post secondary education.

The biennial report on the community's goals and benchmarks for Tasmania for 2020 will be presented to parliament today.

The report canvassed 171 measures of progress and 56 per cent showed improvement, with 44 per cent either staying the same or getting worse.

The Chair of the Tasmania Together Board, Bob Campbell, says some social and education measures showed improvement.

"The number of Tasmanians who are long term unemployed has declined," Mr Campbell said.

"People also feel quite safe now in public places and at home both day and night.

"There's been an increase participation in post secondary education and the number of Tasmanians commencing apprenticeships has achieved the target."

However, the report indicated there had been an increase in the number of young people being killed through risky behaviour.

Also, Tasmania continues to have low school retention rates compared to the rest of the country.
