Public gallery cleared before pulp mill vote

Posted August 27, 2008 20:30:00

A Tasmanian Greens bill to stop Gunns pulp mill project has been defeated, but not before hundreds of people were ejected from State Parliament.

About 200 people were in Launceston's Albert Hall to hear debate on the Bill designed to reverse the pulp mill's approval.

When the Premier David Bartlett rose to say the government would not support the legislation an elderly woman yelled out "this Government is corrupt."

She was restrained by two security guards and escorted outside.

Another two women, one of whom was in a wheelchair, were sent out for the same reason.

Labor backbench Lisa Singh and the Liberals Jeremy Rockcliff were booed when they gave their reasons for voting against the Bill.

As the house prepared to vote, many in the public gallery stood, turned their backs and chanted "shame."

The public gallery was then cleared.

The campaigners chanted "No Mill" from outside Albert Hall as the Government and Liberals voted down the Bill.
