Goose Ponds croc missing

Posted August 28, 2008 08:20:00

The Goose Ponds in North Mackay could be crocodile-free, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) saying the resident 2.5 metre croc has not been spotted in the past month.

The animal was washed into the ponds during the February floods and has continually avoided the harpoon and netting attempts.

Senior wildlife ranger Selina Neal says it could have finally moved into the local creek system because it was agitated from the EPA's last capture attempt on August 1.

"I wish I knew where he's gone. There's two areas he could have taken out through - through the outlet up through Lines Creek or he could have gone down to the end of Goose Pond Creek into the James Creek and into the system from there," she said.

"Or he could still be in the Goose Ponds for all I know - [he is] just being very, very careful with his hiding."
