Whan offers writers' centre assurances

Posted August 28, 2008 13:40:00

A New South Wales Government MP says regional writers' centres have a sound future and their funding will not be axed.

The South Coast Writers Centre in Wollongong is one of seven in regional areas worrying about a report commissioned by the Government that recommended it stop funding them.

The centres now face a further hurdle with a second review of the centres continuing for the remainder of the year.

The Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts, Steve Whan, says immediate funding has been guaranteed and he will back moves to ensure their long-term future.

"The information I'm being given is that funding won't be cut. There is a review. Obviously we can't predict what will happen in the review, but I certainly wouldn't be panicking about it," he said.

"What I would be doing is thinking about the sort of submission and the sort of consultation that they want to pass on to the person who will be doing the review."
