Labor should admit WA's lost Inpex gas plant: Barnett

Posted August 28, 2008 17:00:00

The Liberal Leader, Colin Barnett, says the Premier must come clean and tell voters Western Australia has lost a multi billion dollar gas project to the Northern Territory.

The Japanese company Inpex says it will conduct more drilling in Darwin Harbour next week to assess the geological and foundation conditions in the area.

The company has been considering Darwin along with the Maret Island off the Kimberley Coast for the location of the plant, which will process gas from the Ichthys Gas Field in the Browse Basin.

Mr Barnett says the decision by Inpex to conduct more drilling proves Western Australia has lost the project.

"Well it's very unusual for a company to start work on a site in Darwin if they weren't intending to go to Darwin," he said.

"I think now is the time for Eric Ripper and Alan Carpenter to fess up and tell the truth."

A spokesman for Mr Carpenter says Inpex has not advised the Government of any decision.
