Tasmania's Opposition wants assurances that the omission of hundreds of patients from the state's elective surgery waiting lists is an isolated incident.

An audit found that two surgeons at the North-West Regional Hospital had left 800 patients off the state's waiting lists.

The Opposition's Health spokesman, Brett Whiteley says the hospital's waiting list has now ballooned to 1900 patients.

"The big question is, is that happening in any other region in the state?" he asked.

The Health Minister Lara Giddings told Parliament yesterday the situation was not acceptable and the patients were now on the list where they should be.

"We are working quickly to provide the surgery needed for those people," she said.

A departmental spokesman says the audit was part of a continual checking of cases across Tasmanian hospitals and no other significant problems have been identified.
