Injury prevention project cuts hospital admissions

Posted August 29, 2008 08:43:00

A child injury prevention project in Mackay and Mount Isa has led to a 16 per cent decrease in admissions to hospital.

The three-year study of zero to four-year-olds found that a strong awareness campaign and better communication between community services prevented about 240 visits to the emergency department and the hospitalisation of 85 children.

The Mackay Base Hospital spokesman, Dr Dale Hanson, says the project led to decreases when hospitalisations for falls, burns, poisoning and drowning were increasing across the state.

"Probably a thousand families here have avoided the horrible moment of where their children have been injured," he said.

"That report specifically recommends to Queensland Health that this was a successful project and we ought to roll the same ideas out across the state."
