Publicans warn of more early closures

Posted August 29, 2008 10:09:00

Longreach publicans have warned they may consider closing early again on weekends if antisocial behaviour of patrons and vandalism does not improve.

All pubs and clubs in the town closed early last Friday night in a move planned by the Longreach Liquor Accord to highlight the problem.

Accord chairman Mick Coureas says people affected by alcohol and illegal drugs have caused significant property damage in recent months and it needs to stop.

"We had a meeting about a month ago just regarding the vandalism going around town and the property that was getting damaged at pubs and clubs," he said.

"We thought as part of the accord that we'd put a bit of a shock into the town and the young people - if they don't start respecting the hoteliers and the publicans - it might be a thing in the future."
