A man and a woman from the Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe have pleaded guilty to the theft of the medical records of two AFL players.

Thirty-two year old Catherine Mitchell and 37 year old Robert Crouch both pleaded guilty to theft by finding in the Heidelberg Magistrates Court.

The court heard Mitchell found the medical records outside the Ivanhoe Rehabilitation Centre and sold them to Channel Seven as part of a drugs in sport story.

Mitchell told the court a Channel Seven journalist offered her $300 from his own pocket, saying the exclusive was going to make his career.

The network had promised the pair $3,000 in total.

Mitchell said she thought the fact the medical records were left in the street was the story, not their contents.

But today but Mitchell and Crouch said what they did was wrong, greedy and unethical.

They have been put on a 12 month good behaviour bond.
