MP airs power debate anger

Posted August 29, 2008 13:30:00

The Member for Tamworth, Peter Draper, has criticised both major parties after the New South Wales Government's failed power privatisation legislation debate yesterday.

The debate was called off almost before it began, on confirmation the Coalition would not support an electricity sell-off.

Premier Morris Iemma has now denied he is being sneaky in pushing ahead with an alternative electricity privatisation package that does not need the approval of Parliament to proceed.

Mr Draper says the early sitting of Parliament has cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

He says Barry O'Farrell should have declared his position on the sale last week to stop the waste of resources.

"As soon as the Government realised that their proposal to sell electricity was dead in the water they shut down the debate to save the Premier being embarrassed," he said.

"It was a complete farce, it's cost the taxpayers of NSW $500 million to recall Parliament for a sham.

"I think it's just a terrible indictment on the lack of quality of leadership in this state."
