Triple Olympian Matthew Wells has announced his retirement from hockey.

The 30-year-old Tasmanian has been a defender with the Kookaburras for the last decade.

Wells won his first gold medal at a Junior World Cup before going on to win medals in three Olympic and Champions Trophy campaigns.

He has also enjoyed World Cup and Commonwealth Games success, as well as captaining the Tasmanian Tigers in the national league.

Wells says he has mixed feelings about the Kookaburras, who were gold medal favourites, finishing with bronze at the Beijing Olympics.

"Probably the biggest low of my sporting career right at the end, sort of taking that fairytale ending away was shattering," Wells said.

"At the same time there was a lot of highs and I think the last game, the way we finished and the style we did it in, I think that was one of the highest moments of my career as well."
