LNP may offer council merger compo ahead of election

Posted August 29, 2008 17:33:00

Queensland Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg says the State Government has treated local councils unfairly since forcing them to amalgamate earlier this year.

Mr Springborg says repeated requests for compensation have been ignored.

He says the Liberal-National Party (LNP) will consider offering a compensation package ahead of the next election.

But in the meantime, he says ratepayers have a right to feel hard done by.

"The Government does have a duty to ensure that councils who have been severely and drastically affected by the forced amalgamation agenda are properly financially compensated for it," he said.

"Now it's been absolutely unfair from this Bligh Government to actually just force the cost on to rate payers which have been absolutely extraordinary through out Queensland."
