NSW Premier Morris Iemma has seized on comments made by Opposition MP Mike Baird, who has not ruled out challenging Barry O'Farrell for the Liberal leadership ahead of the next election.

There has been ongoing speculation that the Opposition's Energy and Commerce spokesman Mike Baird would like one day to be Liberal Leader.

On Fairfax Radio Mr Baird did not give a definite answer about his short-term ambitions when asked whether he will challenge Mr O'Farrell's leadership.

"There is one leadership team in trouble and that is Morris ... at the moment and that is Morris Iemma," he replied.

Failing to rule out at the prospect, has led the Premier to reach this conclusion.

"Mr O'Farrell is in leadership quicksand and it is quite clear that the Member for Manly is lining up," he said.

Treasurer Michael Costa has today given details about his future plans, confirming that he will not be contesting the next election.
