Jankovic reaches quarter-finals with testing win

Second seed Jelena Jankovic survived yet another testing encounter to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open overnight, beating Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Serbian, one of four players who can overtake compatriot Ana Ivanovic as world number one at the end of the tournament, pushed hard in her previous two matches, again became embroiled in a war of attrition but her superior fitness and strength proved key as she rallied for victory.
"I had to really play a lot more aggressive because it's quite windy and she was a lot more solid than I was in the first set," Jankovic said in a courtside interview.
"I took a bit more control in the second and cruised through in the third so I am really pleased."
The 18-year-old Wozniacki, seeded 21st, out-manoeuvred Jankovic in the first set but as the match wore on the Serbian began to win the majority of the longer rallies.
After levelling the match, she broke in the fourth game of the third set and then eased through the next three games to clinch victory and a match with 29th seed Sybille Bammer of Austria, who beat French 12th seed Marion Bartoli 7-6, 0-6, 6-4.
