A Sunbury man, in Melbourne's outer north, has been taken to hospital after being attacked by a kangaroo.

The man was jogging near his home just after 1:00pm (AEST), when the male kangaroo attacked him.

He managed to fight off the animal and ran to a friend's house.

Paramedics treated a large scratch on the man's head, and smaller incisions on his chest, arms and hands.

He was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
