Staff at a bank in Shepparton are getting counselling after an armed robbery this morning.

A man holding a sawn off shot gun walked into the Goulburn Murray Credit Union at 9:45am (AEST).

He told staff and customers to lie down on the floor, then demanded money from the bank tellers.

He walked out and got into a white or grey 1990's Ford sedan driven by another man.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Bailey from the Armed Crime Taskforce says no-one was hurt but the bank employees and customers were shaken.

"There was a lot of staff in there at the time and yes they are quite shocked and upset as a result of what's occurred," he said.

"But their manager's there and they're all discussing it and doing a bit of counselling on their own and they've shut the bank for the day."

The suspect is described as being 30 to 40 years old, and overweight with dark skin.
