$33m research facility to focus on biosecurity

Posted September 2, 2008 21:36:00

Biosecurity research will be the focus of a new $33 million research facility officially opened today at Gatton, west of Brisbane.

The Centre for Advanced Animal Science at the University of Queensland's Gatton campus is the result of a collaboration between the university and the State Government.

UQ Vice Chancellor Paul Greenfield says some of the country's best scientists will be working on projects to prevent and fight diseases affecting the agricultural industry like the Hendra virus and equine influenza.

"I think biosecurity has grown due to a whole series of world events, but certainly I think those two events have shown just how we're not immune from those issues and how we need capability and this facility provides that capability," he said.

"Now these facilities will allow research into how these things can be prevented and if they do occur how they can be minimised."
