Fed Govt boosts Aust research by $250m

Posted September 3, 2008 16:27:00

The Federal Government will spend nearly $250 million over the next five years trying to lure the world's top researchers to work in Australian universities.

The Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme will award $3 million to 15 scholars a year to set up teams for research and development.

The Minister for Science and Research, Kim Carr, says that will provide a significant boost to research in Australia.

"It will give top international researchers a reason to come here, or to stay here if they happen to be Australian," he said.

"It will tackle big issues and open up new career paths for emerging talent.

"The scheme is open to scholars worldwide, but most of the work of course must be done in Australia, where we will see a benefit for the community that actually supports these scholars [who] can achieve some gains."
