A 15-year-old boy has been shot dead near Port Macquarie on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Police say they were called to a home at West Haven, near Laurieton, shortly after midday yesterday.

They discovered the teenager's body in the house and say he had suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

They later found a firearm in the house.

Police arrested another teenager yesterday afternoon and spoke to several others in a bid to establish what happened.

The 15-year-old was later released by police.

A post-mortem will be conducted and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
