DPI to discuss station closure with community

Posted September 4, 2008 09:35:00

Victoria's Department of Primary Industries (DPI) secretary, Richard Bolt, is due to meet a Mallee community today to discuss the closure of a local research station.

The Victorian Government announced last month it planned to cut DPI jobs and close several sites, including the Walpeup station.

Residents are concerned the move will destroy their community.

National party leader Peter Ryan says the community is entitled to answers.

"No-one knows if any options were explored before the decision was taken and no-one knows if options are realistically being explored by the Government to enable the facility to continue," he said.

"I think there are many questions around those two primary factors and I would urge the Government and its representatives to be full and frank in their commentary with the local people."
