Burdekin rail bridge reopens after flooding

Posted September 4, 2008 10:27:00

The Expedition Pass Bridge in the Burdekin has reopened, allowing locomotives to resume hauling cane from farms in the Millaroo and Dalbeg area.

Flash flooding damaged the bridge earlier in the year, forcing the mill to resort to hauling the cane by road.

CSR Burdekin mills cane supply manager Brett Jurd says the bridge repairs are only temporary, while engineers work on restoring it to its original design.

"Basically, what we've got across there at the moment is a piece of structure that will cater for 26-tonne locomotives," he said.

"We'd like to get back to the original design where we can run our 40 tonne locomotives across there."
