Police Assoc backs officers over fatal crash

The New South Wales Police Association says it is confident officers will be cleared of any wrongdoing after a fatal crash in Sydney's north-west today.
Police have launched an investigation into the role a police pursuit played in the crash that killed two women, aged 40 and 18, when their car was hit head-on by another car that was suspected of being stolen.
Police say they were initially chasing the car and its 23-year-old male driver just after 8:30am (AEST) this morning.
But Assistant Commissioner Tony McWhirter says police broke off the chase four kilometres before the accident happened.
"There are two separate investigations being conducted," he said.
"One is in relation to the collision itself, the other is in relation to the circumstances surrounding the police pursuit."
Bob Pritchard from the Police Association says the accident happened because of the driver's speed rather than the actions of police.
"I'm very confident that the police will have been shown to have carried out their responsibilities professionally," he said.
The 23-year-old man remains in a critical condition at Sydney's Nepean Hospital.
