Hamilton on pole for Belgian GP

Posted September 6, 2008 23:32:00

Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton put his McLaren on pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday night (Australian time).

The 23-year-old Briton will start Sunday's race with Ferrari's Felipe Massa, his main title rival, alongside on the front row.

Australia's Mark Webber will start from seventh.

Ferrari's world champion Kimi Raikkonen, who has won the last three Belgian Grands Prix, qualified fourth with fellow Finn Heikki Kovalainen third for McLaren.

The pole was Hamilton's 11th of his career and fifth of the season.

Hamilton leads Massa by six points in the championship with six races remaining, while Raikkonen is a further seven points adrift.
