Murray-Darling crisis may push rare owl to extinction

Posted September 7, 2008 14:00:00

The National Parks Association says the barking owl species is facing extinction because of the state of the Murray-Darling Basin.

The owl is listed as a 'vulnerable' threatened species by the New South Wales Government.

Carmel Flint from National Parks says a survey of the species has led the association to call for urgent protection of the owl's habitat in the state's south-west.

"Unfortunately during those surveys we've only discovered a single pair of barking owls, despite the fact that they were targeting known habitat areas where they have previously been recorded," he said.
