McEwen leads Australia to Vattenfall treble

Posted September 8, 2008 09:16:00

Robbie McEwen has beaten compatriots Mark Renshaw and Allan Davis in an Australian clean sweep of the Vattenfall Cyclassic Pro Tour race in Hamburg.

McEwen, 36, used his experience to overtake Renshaw on the final stretch while Davis had to be content with third place at the end of the 213-kilometre ride.

The win was consolation for McEwen who, despite previous stage victories in the Tour of Romandie and the Tour of Switzerland, was regularly dominated in the mass sprints this season.

Forced to sacrifice his chances to Silence-Lotto leader Cadel Evans in the Tour de France, McEwen also failed to win a Tour stage in July for the first time in five years.

McEwen abandoned the Giro d'Italia without a stage victory after winning at least one in the six previous years.

The decisive sprint was lined up after the peloton caught Colombian escapee Rigoberto Uran with two kilometres to go.

The Quick Step and Liquigas teams took over in the final stretch and Renshaw made his move before being overtaken by McEwen.

The Australian announced this week he was leaving Silence-Lotto to join wealthy Russian team Katyusha next season.
