Interest grows in whale watching

Posted September 9, 2008 10:35:00

The whale watching industry on the New South Wales far south coast is gearing up for another busy season.

Humpbacks have begun their annual migration southwards, with a number of sightings in recent days.

Eden cruise boat operator Ross Butt says interest in the giant mammals continues to grow.

"Last year, particularly when there was talk that the Japanese were going to start killing them, I think some people said, 'well we'd better get in and see them before they all disappear'," he said.

"I don't think that's going to happen and they won't disappear because their numbers do appear to be increasing and at this stage very early in the season [there are] some spectacular sightings off this part of the coast at the moment."
