Tamil Tigers deny plane shot down

Posted September 10, 2008 00:36:00

Tamil Tiger rebels have denied Sri Lankan Government claims that a guerrilla plane was shot down, and said the aircraft which bombed a military base in the island's north had "safely returned home".

However the guerrillas said they lost 10 suicide bombers who took part in a coordinated ground and air attack against the Vavuniya military complex as their aircraft bombed a radar system there.

"The aircraft of the Air Tigers that participated in the sortie safely returned home," Tiger spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiriyan said in a statement.

"Ten Black Tigers [suicide bombers] sacrificed their precious lives."
