Council urges 10pc irrigation allocation

Posted September 10, 2008 09:33:00

A north-west Victorian council is calling for a 10 per cent allocation to irrigators next week.

Murray irrigators in Victoria are still on zero allocations compared to South Australian irrigators who have 6 per cent and New South Wales irrigators on 25 per cent.

Mildura Mayor John Arnold says with vine buds bursting and the valencia orange crop nearing harvest, there is a desperate need for an allocation.

"A number of growers haven't got any carryover. I have spoken to a number who have only very, very small amounts and certainly looking at a desperate situation," he said.

"As we can see, there has been some increase in storages, it seems to me to be appropriate if we can [receive] a minimum of 10 per cent of allocation."
